Salon Spotlight: Mocha Hair Design (Barbados)

Ms. Nikele Davis, stylist for a decade and the sole owner of Mocha Hair Designs, gives us a sneak peek into the birth, vision and a sample of hairstyles from her four-year-old salon located on the West coast of Barbados. 

“Lots of people often ask me what inspired me to start Mocha Hair Designs (MHD) and truthfully, I was never able to give one direct answer to that question, but I quickly came to the realization that more than one thing inspired me to give birth my idea Mocha Hair Designs (MHD), ​so I have decided to list a few:

1. Those beautiful melanin girls with natural hair and locs, who do not have a voice to speak out and say, “We need our own version of beauty; inspired me.” 
2. The male figures in our society, who rock locs and aren't respected enough because their appearance is associated with negativity. They inspired me to show the world that men with locs can be well-groomed, hence the reason we introduced the male section at MHD: The Grooming Bar for men and boys.
3. Last but certainly not least, the entrepreneur DNA is in my blood; plus, I am surrounded by strong women,such as Icha Tiyi ,Danielle Belgrave and Elizabeth Jerime, who themselves are entrepreneurs.

All these are major inspirations."

The Vision

Mocha Hair Designs was created to shape the way people view their natural hair & locs​. It was created to help an individual rocking their own hair, and to feel comfortable doing so in a uniquely stylish and fashionable manner. We are not only a natural hair and locs beauty salon, but a brand that represents the art of naturally expressing ourselves by being at peace with what we see in the mirror at any age.

At MHD, we believe beauty is more than just the outward appearance: eating the healthiest foods, which promote healthy ,luscious hair; exercising to help with everyday troubles of life and keeping fit; reducing stress, which affects not only our hair, but our bodies overall; and finally, using the best products to keep our hair and bodies healthy.    

Nikele, landed her first job at Hapi Loc Groomers, working with one of the founding mothers of the Natural Hair industry in Barbados, Mama Hajar.  “Working in an environment such as Hapi Locs Groomers, where all the stylists were uniquely and extremely talented, inspired me and made such a tremendous impact on my creative mind. It motivated me to put my stamp on and in the industry,” she recollects. 

In the near future, she is looking forward to experimenting with natural hair enhancers and believes that the wide variety of colors available now is amazing. As it relates to styling and having a "favorite" hairstyle, she does not have one. “Each style is a work of art and it should enhance the canvas the person wearing it, so to answer that, I would say, I'm in love with the entire process.”  Well said, Nikele.
